American television host Ed Sullivan smiles while standing with British rock group the Beatles on the set of his television variety series, New York, February 9, 1. Left to right: Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Sullivan, John Lennon, Paul Mc. Cartney. That all changed 5. British musicians landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and detonated a cultural explosion that would reverberate for many years afterward. I refer, of course, to the thrilling arrival in America of that one- of- a- kind band that we have all come to know and love, that amazing band that transformed American music forever: The Bachelors! B3ta newsletter 672 - have a fucking newsletter you beautiful bastards. Seriously - your enthusiasm has made us make the effort. Yes, I jest. The Bachelors are a wonderful group (they had a big hit here in January of 1. Beatles. No other group could be, and no other group ever will be. It was the Beatles who landed in America in February of 1. Like certain other key individuals in the history of American pop, such as Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley, they caused an initial fervor, a “mania” period when teenagers expressed their excitement en masse at their concerts and public appearances. But the Beatles, like their predecessors (but even more so), progressed beyond this stage and became a cultural force, their compositions and attitudes transforming the way pop music was experienced by large numbers of people. Coinciding with one of the most socially tumultuous periods in the history of America, the Beatles’ music reflected its era but also transcended it, so that even now their music remains fresh to each successive generation that discovers it. Today, in honor of the anniversary of the Beatles’ arrival on these shores, we take a lighthearted look at the impact they had on the American cultural landscape. You paid the bills this month, and maybe even had extra to spend on non-necessities. It doesn’t matter how much you belabored the checks as they. Here are seven ways in which the Beatles changed America forever. The Beatles raised the bar for teen idol quality. Before the Beatles arrived in America, the pop scene squeaked along on the charms of a handful of clean- cut, pearly- toothed fellows, mostly from Philadelphia, whose music was as manufactured as their boy- next- door images. These fellows were nice enough, and in some cases even had some talent, but their careers were directed by producers and industry men who turned the gears of the hit- making machine that pop music had become by the early 6. No more the wild ravings of a Little Richard or a Jerry Lee Lewis; rock’n’roll was now represented by more manageable song slingers like Fabian, Frankie Avalon, and Bobby Rydell. Watch Paul Mc. Cartney's mini bio: Questioning the taste of America’s youth is a pointless endeavor (it’s a matter of record that in the 5. Pat Boone rivaled and occasionally exceeded Elvis Presley in teen popularity polls), but certainly the Beatles were a blast of cool air into a somewhat arid teen idol landscape. Not only were they intriguingly exotic with their Liverpudlian accents and unusual looks, but they were also like four teen idols wrapped up in one gleaming package. There was Paul, the cute and adorable one; John, the smart and slightly dangerous one; George, the quiet and shy one; and Ringo, the fun and goofy one. There was something for all teen tastes, made all the more enticing by the “all- for- one, one- for- all, lads” uniformity of their presentation: the matching moptops, collarless button- down suits, and Cuban- heeled ankle boots. One important difference between the Beatles and their teen idol competition, though, was that the Beatles controlled their presentation. With their manager Brian Epstein, they chose their wardrobe, much of it derived from fashionable friends they made in their early days in Hamburg. More significantly, the Beatles also controlled their music, which was based on rhythm and blues and Motown models, not Patti Page or Mitch Miller. When they weren’t covering rock’ n’ roll chestnuts of their own choosing, they were composing their own songs, something that few teen idols were allowed to do, even when they were capable. This made all the difference. In addition to being cute and charismatic, the Beatles had substance, and they were intent on proving it. The Beatles made irreverence hip in mainstream culture. Although there is a long tradition of irreverent, anti- authoritative behavior in American culture, the Beatles appeared at a moment in time when this type of attitude was still largely sub- cultural. In fact, performers like comedian Lenny Bruce, who was persecuted for his rule- breaking, were dismissed by mainstream America as troublemakers. American entertainment strived to be an industry that people would respect, delivering safe performers just as Detroit delivered safe cars. Watch John Lennon's mini bio: The Beatles were more self- aware than their previous pop sweepstakes aspirants. They recognized a certain absurdity to the pop game and seemed determined to go their own way. This attitude was always apparent in their dealings with the press. During such encounters, they would good- naturedly turn questions back to reporters or answer them with nonsense. The Beatles made it clear that they were independent thinkers who were going to do what they wanted to do, whether the world approved of them or not. Teens had cottoned on to the rebellious stance of James Dean and Elvis Presley a few years earlier; the Beatles adopted this stance, but they conveyed it in a more sophisticated and subtle way. Never as docile as Elvis, who was unfailingly polite to all adults no matter how crass they were, the Beatles’ quips during their press conferences could have genuine bite to them. It was one of many ways that they showed their awareness of the showbiz apparatus that they operated in and how deserving it was of lampooning. The resultant anarchy was confusing and charming to adults in equal measure. Occasionally the group would push their irreverence a bit too far; a John Lennon remark that they were “bigger than Jesus” resulted in record album bonfires in certain parts of the country and a temporary downturn in their sales in 1. But most pop music fans (and if you were a fan of pop music in the 6. Beatles) appreciated the group’s honesty and trusted them. This trust would only strengthen as the Beatles continued to grow and move into more esoteric areas musically and politically. Young people viewed the Beatles as their cultural representatives, and they followed the group’s lead. It wouldn’t be long before irreverence would turn national, and, after a time, become a permanent feature of American youth culture (some might say all of American culture). The Beatles, a self- contained unit with a damn- the- consequences attitude, had as much to do with this transformation as anyone. They also opened the door for any number of bands who could express this attitude more freely once the barrier had been pushed. The Beatles made long hair for men acceptable, even desirable. It seems ridiculous now, but before the Beatles came to America, “longhair” was a term applied to a very small group of people, mostly artists. Long hair was seen as part and parcel of an eccentric artistic temperament, perhaps with a special exemption for religious men from exotic climes who grew their hair and beards devotionally. Watch Ringo Starr's mini bio: Then the Beatles showed up with their “moptops.” Most early press coverage of the group obsesses over hairstyles we would now consider rather neat and tidy. In one instance, a reporter asking “Where did you get those hair- dos. Once established, the hairstyle took on a life of its own as Beatle wigs were manufactured and comedians on television variety shows donned the look for easy laughs. Not above profiting from such mindlessness, the Beatles saw their bank accounts grow, although it wasn’t long before the moptop was topped. As time went on and other groups followed the Beatles’ example, hair grew longer and longer. By 1. 96. 6, the Beatles were sporting facial hair. The full- blown “hippie” look was around the corner, and the Beatles spearheaded the trend. By the end of the 6. Beatle George among the hairiest). Long hair became a signifier, a badge of disdain for societal norms; consequently, most establishment figures hated the hippie look, and attacks on hippies were not unheard of even into the early 7. Eventually, though, even politicians had hair growing over their ears and collars, and the revolution was won. Wearing long hair was no longer a provocative act as it was when the Beatles first did it. It simply became another choice. The Beatles psychedelicized us. Although there were early rumblings on the west coast of the U. S., and Donovan was beginning to sing about sunshine supermen and “taking trips” in the U. K., the Beatles were among the first and certainly the most far- reaching of the pop bands of the 6. America with the psychedelic virus. LSD was still a legal drug in America when the Beatles started to sing about “turning off your mind,” but in a couple of years it would be outlawed, in large part because of its raised profile. Watch George Harrison's mini bio: The first indication that the Beatles had entered a new phase of exploration was the last song on their 1. Revolver. The lyrics to the song “Tomorrow Never Knows” were cribbed from a book called The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, co- written by LSD advocate Dr. Timothy Leary, guru Ram Dass, and academic Ralph Metzner. Like the language of the book, “Tomorrow Never Knows” featured abstract lyrics infused with a spiritual undercurrent, and the music matched their tone—an Indian music drone weaved through a hypnotic, unceasing drum pattern that seemed about to trip itself with every repetition, and various reoccurring backwards tape effects created an otherworldly scramble. John Lennon’s vocal was processed so that it sounded swirling and distant. Paul Mc. Cartney’s laughter was looped and played backwards to produce a flock of crying seagulls. He also explained that he would be getting on a plane to go to Comet Ping Pong himself to investigate. He would shortly backtrack, saying it was “really creepy” and “he doesn’t have the self- control to be around those people” while noting that they’ve had reporters go there and they’d keep covering it. That video is no longer available, as is other related content. He has since removed the video. According to the Internet Archive, the “Down The #Pizzagate Rabbit Hole” video was online as of December 6 but “removed by the user” by December 7. A tweet by Jones promoting the video is still online; it captures roughly 1. You. Tube page. Non- Jones You. Tube accounts have re- uploaded the “Down The #Pizzagate Rabbit Hole – Warning! On top of that, in a video he posted on the 1. Jones said that he previously stated that there was likely nothing going on in the Pizzagate story and that he had warned his staff that it was “probably a setup.” He also added that someone shooting up the place would be a way to set him up to be banned from the airwaves as he’d be blamed for the actions.? Like Dashlane 4 and a few others, Keeper is completely free if you use it on just one device. You can kick its tires without committing to the paid edition. Keeper AppIf you find you like it and want to use it on all your devices, you can upgrade. Creating an account is a snap. First, enter your email address and strong master password. As you type your master password, Keeper rates its security using a color- coded progress bar. I wish it did the same when you go to change the master password; unfortunately, it does not. Next up is your security question and answer. I always recommend that you eschew the predefined questions and make up something that you, and only you, know how to answer. In this case, it's especially important, as Keeper creates a second copy of the master data key, encrypted using the security answer. If you somehow manage to forget your master password, you can recover your data based on the security answer, an emailed verification code, and (if enabled) a code from your two- factor authentication system. The folks at Keeper Security want you to have a smooth experience getting started. Once you've set up your account, you see a Quick Start checklist with four items: create your first record, install the browser extension, upload a file, and configure two- factor authentication. Clicking an item walks you through the necessary steps; once you've finished, a checkmark appears next to the item. It's a nice introduction. I'm impressed that Keeper puts two- factor authentication at the forefront. I'll discuss two- factor options below. If you're switching to Keeper from another password manager, the ability to import your existing passwords is a huge plus. Keeper can import from Last. Pass, Dashlane, Sticky Password Premium, and a dozen other competing products. It will also import passwords stored insecurely in Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. For each import choice, there's a popup help window detailing every step of the process; that's a very nice touch. Password Capture and Replay. Most password managers automatically capture your login credentials when you log in to a secure website. Keeper takes a slightly different approach. It places a lock icon in the username and password fields, and you click the lock to create a new login. Keeper pre- fills the username field with your email address and generates a random password in case you're signing up for a new account. You can give the new entry a friendly name at this point, but you can't assign it to a folder. When you submit your entry, Keeper both saves it and logs you in. Password replay likewise relies on the lock icon. Clicking the lock gets you a popup menu from which you can log in to the site or create a new record. If you've stored multiple sets of credentials, it displays the most recent one, with an option to choose from a menu of the rest. When you click the browser toolbar button, you don't immediately see a menu of available logins, the way you do with Last. Pass 4. 0 Premium and others. Rather, you must click the search icon and start typing the name of the item you want. A list of matching records appears, those that match what you've typed so far. Click the appropriate one to go to the site in question, then click the lock icon to log in. Two- Factor Authentication. The basic protection for your collection of passwords and other data is the master password, which is something you know. Other possible authentication factors are a smartphone (something you have) or a fingerprint (something you are). Once you enable two- factor authentication, nobody can unlock your account using just the master password. The last time I reviewed Keeper, two- factor authentication only applied the first time you logged in on a new device. In the current edition, you can require two- factor authentication on every login, if you wish. Keeper supports five types of two- factor authentication, but most users can rule out two of them right away. Some businesses use RSA Secure. ID tokens for authentication, but you probably don't have one. And if you choose authentication using Duo Security, you'll find that it's only available in Keeper's business- focused edition. Given that SMS- based two- facture authentication is no longer considered secure, drop that one too. That leaves two possibilities. If you have a smartwatch, Keeper DNA is a convenient solution. When you enter your master password, Keeper sends a notification to the watch. All you need to do is tap the Keeper DNA app on the watch to verify that it's you. For most users, the go- to second authentication factor is the free Google Authenticator app. Select it, snap the QR code with your app, and you're ready to go. At login, you enter the master password along with the time- sensitive code generated by the app. You can also use Duo Mobile, Twilio Authy, or any other Google Authenticator work- alike. On devices that support it, you can opt to authenticate using your fingerprint. You'll have to use two- factor authentication the first time you set up a new device, but you can tell Keeper to forego two- factor thereafter, or to not ask again for 3. Last. Pass offers many two- factor options, from the high- tech Yubikey down to a no- tech paper grid. True Key by Intel Security specializes in multi- factor authentication; if you enable enough other factors, you can use them to reset a lost master password. Password Generator. As noted, when you click the lock icon in a username or password field, Keeper automatically generates a password. By default, it creates 1. I'd prefer a larger default value, at least 1. Agile. Bits 1. Password 6. Since the password manager remembers it, you don't need it short and simple. By sliding a control, you can crank the length up to more than 5. The password generator in Last. Pass lets you suppress too- similar characters like capital O and digit 0, or generate a pronounceable password like . Password offers a different option for that situation. You can have it generate a length passphrase, such as . Here you can rename entries for easier searching, and attach files or photos. Expert users can even create custom fields, to handle nonstandard logins. I'm impressed with the seamless similarity of the application and the web- based vault. They appear nearly identical, and they work in exactly the same way. The mobile apps hew closely to this layout, though they have a few mobile- specific differences. Most password managers let you impose order on your collection by a system of tags, categories, or folders. Last. Pass, Log. Me. Once, and Sticky Password are among those that let you impose organization at password capture time. Last. Pass, Robo. Form, and Password Boss Premium even let you create nested folders, which become nested menus below the browser toolbar button. Keeper works a bit differently. You can't assign a folder at capture time, but you can edit any record and enter the desired folder name. I'd be happier with the ability to drag and drop records into folders, especially if I could select several at once. While it's easy to access the Keeper Vault from the browser toolbar menu, you can also log in from any secure computer. Conversely, if you lose your Internet connection, you can still use the local app to view and manage passwords. Password Sharing. Promiscuous password sharing is a bad thing, but there are situations when you need to share. For example, a couple might share their joint bank account's login, or parents might share a Netflix login with the kids. Keeper gives you full control over sharing passwords and folders. If you've shared a folder, To share a password or folder, you simply click the sharing icon and enter the email address of the recipient. A recipient who doesn't have Keeper gets an email with a link to set up a free account. Once the recipient has accepted the shared item, you get a notification. Clicking the sharing icon presents a list of all your shared items. If necessary, you can edit an item to revoke sharing. By default, the recipient can use and view the shared login, but can't edit it or share it with others. As appropriate, you can enable editing or sharing, or even make the recipient the owner of the item. Some password managers offer a kind of deferred sharing that kicks in only in the event of your demise. With Last. Pass or Dashlane, you enable emergency access for one or more trusted friends, and define a wait time, up to 3. Last. Pass, 6. 0 for Dashlane. When that friend requests access, you get a notification. If you're not dead after all, you can revoke emergency access during the wait time (and start looking for a more reliable friend). You can configure Log. Me. Once to withhold the deferred share until you've supplied the company with a death certificate.
